My aunt sent me that book back when I was a tween and thought I'd become a PI when I grew up. Have been hooked on Dirk Gently and Douglas Adams ever since.
Ah, the memories!
I never heard of Dirk Gently, but I loved all the Hitch-hiker books. Also the BBC radio series based on Hitchhiker's Guide to the galaxy was fantastic. I remember listening to that on NPR in California before I had ever seen any of the books. Must have been the early '80's.
