On an average day in West Virginia, about 3 million pounds of explosives are detonated during the process of mountain top removal to exhume coal seams. One addendum: I'm not an expert, but mining often uses the diesel/ammonium nitrate explosive. It's cheap, and relatively safe to handle and transport.
