Bif's Best Christmas EVAR!

Sunday evening, I walked the 3/4 mile or so trip to the grocery store to do some shopping. Food for Christmas for some years now has been a large block (5 or 6 pounds) of frozen lasagne, salad, and garlic bread. It involves little work, and is definitely "treat" food for me, plus there's leftovers for days. (As an aside, I had Stouffer's lasagne Italiano; it was superb!) Also intended to get fruit, some English muffins, and so on, but the reason I had to go then was that Bif was out of food, and down to the little fragments that he prefers to not eat. He will if he's hungry enough, but I don't like to put him in that position. So waiting until light in the morning wasn't really an option. I also meant to get him a catnip toy, but forgot- I'll pick one up in pre-New Year shopping.

I think many of the items I ended up getting were overstocks, and my final bill was surprisingly low to me. But one that was obviously normally priced was the 7 pound bag of cat food for $5.99. Now that sort of surprised me. I've been buying cat food at local convenience stores since last Christmas, and have become accustomed to paying about $3.00/lb. So, um, wow. A mile and a half round trip, carrying substantial weight on the return half, is truly taxing to me, and I dislike it. But this was sort of a wake-up pointing out just how much money I'm wasting in avoiding that chore.

So I get the heavy stuff into my pack, a couple bags of lighter stuff in my left hand, and seven pounds of cat food in my right hand, I set out into the light drizzle, light fog, and complete darkness for the trudge home.

About a block and a half from the store, I was suddenly confronted by a construction project. I couldn't see where it ended, but there was chain link fence extending to the edge of the street. Hoping that it was only a lot or two, rather than cross over to the sidewalk, I just followed the edge of the pavement- there was basically no traffic.

It extended two blocks.

I was nearly to the end when I tripped over one of the perpendicular supports at the base of the fence, and went down, hard, face-first, into the pavement.

I was fine. I managed to toss everything and catch most of the impact with my hands. Other than a bunch of grit on my face, a bit of a tender spot on the bridge of my nose where my glasses got rammed into it, and minor road rash on my left palm, no harm done. The light stuff- mostly bread, a couple cans and plastic bottles, was fine. But...

The bottom of the cat food bag had burst completely open. There wasn't much actually spilled, but from side to side, the bottom was completely open. Brushing the crap off my face, and checking around for wounds I couldn't feel (there weren't any), I pondered the situation. Several options occurred to me, then I realized I could simply carry the bag top-down, holding the burst end closed in my hand. Essentially the same configuration I had been in before my belly flop into the street.

The rest of the walk home- better than 3/4 of the last leg- was uneventful.

So when I got home and through the door, I immediately set down the grocery bags, and made a bee-line for the kitchen to get the cat food stowed in a place where it wouldn't spill.

Right as the top-now-bottom was about to reach the counter, it gave out.

Cat food. Everywhere. Floor. Garbage. Counter. Food Bowl. Water bowl. Miscellaneous dishes and a box.

On the positive side, perhaps only a third of the bag spilled before I had it shoved into a position where no more would spill. On the negative side, you have no idea how much 2 pounds of cat food actually *is* until you've strewn it all around the kitchen.

Bif was in heaven. His tail was flagging like a bandleader as he ran from pocket to pocket, eating one or two kibbles from each. I cleaned up the worst on the floor, and scooped much of it into either his bowl or onto the bag- there is no "into" with respect to that bag anymore- but he was having so much fun, I just felt it would be kind of grinchy to do a full-fledged cleanup just then.

As of last night, I'm still hearing crunching sounds from the oddest places, as Bif finds a kibble here, a kibble there. And sometime in the next few days, I'll actually make a cleanup call on aisle one. But for the time being, this is officially Bif's BEST CHRISTMAS EVAR! The fact I forgot to get him a toy is forgiven.

I just hope he's not going to expect this every year.

Boo Yah!

Looks like your faithful blogger will be going on not one, but two (TWO!) field trips to look at honest-to-gawd Western Oregon RAWKS(!) next Monday and Tuesday! Monday: Central Oregon Coast. Tuesday: Quartzville. OMG, I have been so seriously mineral deficient over the past couple of years... I'm drrooooling into my beard...

Signal Strength

Very low. Interzone's WiFi is on the fritz again, so I'm trying (without much success) to keep up from home. Slooooooooooooow.

Just thought I'd let you know what's going on.

Hiatus Interruptus?

The last ten days or so have been pretty brutal... dealing with all sorts of illness, mental and physical, averting eviction, house-sitting three very sweet animals (though one, of the canine persuasion, is profoundly stupid, and yes, Katie, they're all happy and well), dealing with steadily increasing summer temperatures (which always leads to some difficult days at this time of year; all of the next three days are forecast to exceed 95 degree highs), along with stress-and warmth- induced sleep problems. Sorry posting here has been sporadic, but there's not much I could do about it other than warn readers it was coming. It's relatively early yet, but I'm going to do one more pass through my reader, and call it a day. I expect a more standard schedule can be anticpated in days to come. House-sitting concludes Friday.

Heartfelt thanks to siblings and IZ people who've helped me weather this difficult spell.

Wut?

I have never before had as many as 200 visitors in a day. Right now my count is 315, and that's up from 309 just a couple of minutes ago. Of the last 100 visitors, 86 have come in to an archive of posts from June.

And it's not even noon yet.

This appears to be the picture that's attracting all the attention, but I'm not sure...
(From Pundit Kitchen)

So why is it, six months after I posted it, and when the original is in a really popular spot, that everyone is suddenly breaking down the doors of this little blog? And why has no one left any comment, positive or negative, regarding this?

I don't really understand the internet.

Bright Lights Overhead

The International Space Station will be visible from somewhere near my favorite coffee shop over the next couple of days- twice this evening (about an hour and a half apart, the ISS's orbital period) and again tomorrow. We've actually been having some nice clear weather, so the chances seem good that if you go look, you'll be able to see it. The above is the result for Zip Code 97330. If you don't have the good fortune to live in that area, you can enter your own Zip or Canadian postal code on this page, which also has a link to a global satellite search.

I just checked our local weather... we're supposed to get increasing clouds overnight, then a chance of rain increasing through Thursday, followed by a 90% chance of rain Thursday night. So if you want to see, your best chance will be this evening.

Followup: Oops, forgot the whole reason I was posting this... according to the alert SpaceWeather sent me,
DOUBLE FLYBY ALERT: Space shuttle Atlantis undocked from the International Space Station (ISS) this morning at 4:53 am EST. Their separation sets the stage for double flybys of many towns and cities on Wednesday evening, Nov. 25th, when Atlantis and the ISS will soar through the night sky side by side--a fantastic sight. Atlantis is not scheduled to land until Friday morning, Nov. 27th, so the double apparitions will continue on Thursday, Nov. 26th, Thanksgiving in the United States.
So if conditions are good where you live, you should be able to see both the ISS AND Atlantis, flying over head side-by-side!

Lingering Problems

Chrome is still not working right for me, and I'm still doing a lot of my browsing in Explorer, and all of my blogging. On the plus side, I've learned a lot about the structure of the internet and how these attacks work... I certainly take bots a lot more seriously. I ran Spybot Search and Destroy twice yesterday. The first time, it had been several weeks since I last ran it, and it turned up about 50 malware pieces. The second time it had only been 3 or 4 hours, and it turned up 17, despite the fact that I had "immunized" on the first run.

Perhaps this computer was involved, perhaps it wasn't; I don't know how to be certain. However, the alert I was getting from google wasn't accusing this computer, it was accusing the server. When I asked someone else on a different computer to check my blog, he got the same alert and denial. So maybe someone else using the wi-fi in my favorite coffee shop was involved. I think, in the end, it doesn't matter, but I'm still irritable about not being able to use my preferred browser, and being forced to use one I seriously dislike. I may download Firefox today, which seems to be a pretty polarizing browser... people seem to either love it or hate it.

At any rate, I'm continuing to follow the story, not so much because I care about its effects and the personal nuisance it appears to have caused me, but because I find my dependence on the internet's software and hardware infrastructure fascinating, and because I want to understand it better.

Danger! Danger Will Robinson!

When I started up my computer this morning, it told me the "config/sys" file was missing or corrupted. I immediately went into shock.

At any rate, my friend Todd has got the thing up on Linux, connected to the innertubez and we are now in the process of transferring ~ 4 gig of non-replaceable data onto my flash drive so we can proceed with (I guess) some sorts of operations to repair the glitch- which may take out (require reformatting) the C-drive in the process. Hopefully we can get this sorted out; I honestly don't know what I'd do without my faithful internet.

Rain Today (funny story there). Probably no Sunday Funnies this week. Wish me luck.

Followup, 3:48: So we moved some files to make some more room, took the computer off of its Ubuntu life support, then restarted in Windoze to make repairs. It started up just like nothing had ever been wrong. I don't understand Microsoft; I don't think anybody (including Microsoft) does. At any rate, I think I'll call my laptop "Lazarus." At least until the next time it dies.

And I'm adding the "Not Dead Yet" tag to this post.

C'est Moi

My mom gave me an early Christmas present: a digital camera! A pretty nice one, too. It's the one she's had for a while, so there's been some confusion over the manual (found it online), the camera to computer data transfer (couple of trips to Wal-Mart- or as my brother calls it, Wally World, and a little common sense), and coming up to speed on digital vs. film technology (mostly I've just used auto-everything so far; as I have more time, I'll play with other variables and learn how to take advantage of them). But I have managed to get a not-too-flattering self-portrait, which I have now loaded.

I've been spending most of my time with my family, several of whom are also not skiing, so posting has been light, but I'll try to get up some pictures and descriptions of the magnificent vacation area soon. Since all my family is on the eastern part of the continent, I don't see them too often, and they're my first priority right now.
