Late last night, someone linked this post on Stumbleupon. For a few hours, I got peppered with hits. The following shows my visitors and page views as of a few minutes before midnight, when the stats were cleared for today's.
And the one below, captured a few minutes ago, shows that it fell off even faster than it rose.
And this one shows yesterday's visitors compared to the last 30 days.
Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate the visitors, but this sort of thing is actually kind of frustrating. If I click the back link in the stats, I get a generic Stumbleupon page; I can't see the actual post or feed that links to me. Not one of these visitors left any kind of comment, so I have no idea which item(s) were so compelling as to bring in over 2100 visitors in a few hours. Finally, I've been having fun watching the uneven and slow growth of visits and readers in this blog. A spike like that will make it difficult to see anything else for the next month.
Still, I have to admit taking a pleased double-take when I saw the number of visitors had increased by a factor of ten, when I made one last check before going to bed.
Funny.....that looks familiar. I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteThis doesn't surprise me. I figured it would be just a matter of time before others would find you too. I have always loved your sense of humor, and take on things.
ReplyDeleteI sometimes wonder how people find me as well when it has a generic back link.
ReplyDeleteRecently I saw a commercial advertising Kirstie Alley's new show "Life-Lick it!" and was horrified!! While I (luckily- so no one can accuse me of plagiarism) had my blog before the show commercial ads aired, it still bugged me because I knew I'd be getting hits from people looking for her show. Sure enough, I found one today via keywords. Usually the keywords to my blog are pretty funny though.. had I not been so absorbed into geology and thought about it for a second, I would never have used the word "lick". lol. As it is, I just meant that you never really know what a rock really looks like (or how pretty it is) until you lick it.
Lemmy- it's happened to me before as well, though not such a sharp spike, nor to such an extreme.
ReplyDeleteAnon- thanks!
Cannibal- I actually took the "lick" reference to mean taste testing, eg. halite vs. sylvite. Totally forgot that I licked almost every rock I picked up, until I started geo labs. The idea of decades of other students handling and licking the samples was sort of... yuck. But I like your blog's title, and I don't watch enough TV anymore to be aware of what programs are on, or what commercials are playing. I guess I'd be a little indignant if I discovered Kirstie Alley was doing a show called "Outside the Interzone." LOL indeed!
