Geo 365: Sept. 15, Day 258: August Snow

I'm pretty sure we were coming around the north of Hillman Peak at this point, and looking roughly west. The rocks are unremarkable, but this visit was marked by an unusual amount of snow for this late in the season. 2011 was a very late and cool summer; we normally get 2 1/2-3 months of clear, dry, sunny weather. In that year, there was less than a month. Normally, the rim road opens around the beginning of July. This year it wasn't open until the very end of the month- the 29th, if I recall correctly. The point is, if you're traveling, from far away, and have a limited window of opportunity, in the days and weeks ahead of time, stay informed of local conditions. The web has made this incredibly easy, and can prevent disappointment or worse.
