Saturd80's: Legal Tender

I've had this earworm stuck in my head for two or three days now, and thought I'd share. You're welcome.

Like many of the late seventies/early eighties New Wave bands (such as REM, also from Athens, GA), B-52's gradually transformed to more of a pop sound as they matured, but retained enough of their original quirkiness to avoid becoming bland. Roam:

Geo 365: Oct. 19, Day 292: Crater Lake Sunset

As the last little bit of sunlight pours over Merriam Point, Wizard Island is almost invisible, dark against the shaded caldera wall. Hillman Peak and The Watchman stand guard for the evening, and we bid farewell to Crater Lake.

Geo 365: Oct. 18, Day 291: Fire on the Deep

Sunset from the northeastern rim of Crater lake is a thing to behold. Sun Notch on the right and Kerr Notch on the left are the low points on the southern rim. Dutton Cliff is lit up as if by incandescent lava, and while small in this view, the lighting of the Phantom ship is also quite dramatic. This was a long, but good, day.

Followup: Just started my reading, and The Oregonian has posted a photo essay of 45 historic photos from Crater Lake, some from even before its inauguration as a National Park in 1902.

Geo 365: Oct. 17, Day 290: Cloudcap

Cloudcap is the high point on Crater Lake's eastern rim. If you look at the full-size image, there are a lot of interesting features in the slope below it, including what look like tuff deposits and one or more dikes. Once again, Mount Scott looms in the background to the left.

Geo 365: Oct. 16, Day 289: Looking Northeast

Looking northeast from somewhere on Crater Lake's eastern rim, the low mound on the far middle horizon is the shield of Newberry Volcano- the high point right in the middle is almost certainly Paulina Peak. You can also get a sense of the flat, gentle-gradient plain of the feature I refer to as the "east side apron." The apron has formed because deposition rates of pumice and ash from High Cascades eruptions exceeds rates of erosion and incision in most places.

Geo 365: Oct. 15, Day 288: Mount Scott Summit

Looking a bit to the left of yesterday's photo, this is the summit of Mount Scott. It's a significant edifice in its own right, the highest spot in CLNP, and according to Wikipedia, at 8934 feet, the tenth highest peak in the Oregon Cascades. I have a bit of a problem with the article referring to it as a "parasitic" volcano, though. Since we don't know the layout of the pre-caldera Mount Mazama, we don't know the relationship between its summit(s), and Mount Scott. In the same way I don't think of Broken Top as a parasitic cone with respect to Three Sisters (map showing relationship between those four peaks), I'm not convinced it's accurate to think of Mount Scott as a parasitic cone with respect to Mount Mazama.

We're looking into what appears to be a cirque on the north side of the peak. It seems even more clear-cut in the FlashEarth view (which is again, lke yesterday's, my best guess as to where we were).

Geo 365: Oct. 14, Day 287: Mt. Scott, West Flank

Looking roughly south to the western flank of Mount Scott, I'm guessing that smooth, conical section on the right is a remnant of the stratovolcano's original form, before it was glacially dissected. I've just wasted an hour trying to figure out exactly where we were when I took this photo, and have to admit, my generally good "place memory" has failed me completely. I take the FlashEarth Location quite seriously, but today's is my best guess, and NOT what I was recalling.
